London. 2 June 2004.

José Mourinho arrived at Chelsea days after winning the Champions League with Porto. At his first press conference, he introduced himself to English football with one sentence:

“Please don’t call me arrogant… I think I’m a special one.”

It was supposed to be an introduction. It became an identity.

Chelsea won the Premier League in his first season, ending a 50-year wait for the title and setting records along the way.

From that afternoon onward, The Special One was no longer just something Mourinho had said.

It was his name.
