For three weeks, Roberto Baggio kept Italy alive. Two against Nigeria. The winner against Spain. Two more against Bulgaria. Then came the final.

120 minutes. No goals. Penalties.

Baresi missed. Massaro missed. Then Baggio walked to the spot.

Over the bar.

Brazil became world champions. Baggio stood still.

And in that instant, he became the man who died standing. The stadium disappeared. The noise disappeared. Baggio slipped into a world of static — frozen between what had happened and what would follow him forever.
